# How to Make YouTube Shorts with AI in 5 Steps

You can make a YouTube Short with AI without filming or editing: write or generate a script, let an AI tool add the voice, visuals and captions, and upload a vertical video. Once you have the idea, production takes minutes. The idea and the first three seconds still decide whether anyone watches.

Below are the five steps, the specs YouTube uses today, and the mistakes that get AI Shorts skipped or demonetized.

## YouTube Shorts specs at a glance

| Setting | What to use |
| ------------ | ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| Aspect ratio | 9:16 vertical (square also counts as a Short) |
| Resolution | 1080×1920 pixels |
| Length | Up to 3 minutes; 30–60 seconds suits most AI Shorts |
| Format | MP4 |
| Captions | Burned in, in the middle of the frame, clear of the buttons at the bottom and right |
| Music | Royalty-free or licensed; a Short over 1 minute with an active copyright claim is blocked |

Source for length and the copyright rule: YouTube Help, [Understand three-minute YouTube Shorts](https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/15424877). Since October 15, 2024, square or vertical videos up to three minutes count as Shorts. ## Three ways AI can make a Short

Pick the method before you pick a tool:

| Method | You bring | AI does | Best for |
| -------------------------- | ----------------------- | --------------------------------------- | -------------------------------- |
| Fully AI-generated | A topic or script | Script, voice, visuals, captions, music | Faceless channels, daily posting |
| AI editing of your footage | Your own clips | Cuts, captions, reframing | Creators who film |
| Clipping long videos | A podcast or long video | Finds moments, crops to 9:16 | Repurposing existing content |

This guide covers the first method, since it needs no footage at all. If you already have long videos, our [viral clip tool](https://reelsmakerai.com/viral-clip) covers the third.

## Step 1: Pick a niche and one idea

AI makes production fast, so ideas become the bottleneck. Choose a niche you can post in for months, then write ten ideas before you make one video.

A good Short idea is one question or one surprise. "Why do planes fly at 35,000 feet?" is a Short. "Everything about aviation" is not.

Faceless niches that suit AI well: facts and explainers, history, stories, motivation, quizzes, finance basics and top-10 rankings. If you're stuck, the [Shorts idea generator](https://reelsmakerai.com/shorts-idea-generator) suggests ideas by niche.

## Step 2: Write a script with a 3-second hook

The first line is the whole game. Viewers decide in a swipe, so open with the most surprising part, not an introduction.

* Not: "Today we're going to talk about why planes fly so high."
* Instead: "Planes fly at 35,000 feet because the air up there is trying to help them."

Then keep it tight. Narration runs at about 150 words a minute:

* 30 seconds ≈ 75 words
* 45 seconds ≈ 110 words
* 60 seconds ≈ 150 words

End with a line that loops back to the hook or answers it. A Short that ends cleanly gets replayed; one that trails off gets swiped.

**Sample 30-second script (facts niche, 76 words):**

> Planes fly at 35,000 feet because the air up there is trying to help them. Thinner air means less drag, so engines burn less fuel to go the same speed. It's also above most weather, so the ride is smoother. But there's a limit: go too high, and the air is too thin for the wings to grip. So pilots fly in a narrow sweet spot. High enough to save fuel. Low enough to keep flying.

You can write this yourself, or give an [AI script generator](https://reelsmakerai.com/script-generator) the topic and edit what comes back. Always check facts: AI scripts can state wrong numbers with confidence.

## Step 3: Generate the voice, visuals and captions

This is the step AI does for you. In a text-to-video tool, paste the script and choose:

* **Visual style:** realistic or cinematic for facts and stories, anime or comic for lighter topics. Keep one style per channel so viewers recognize you.
* **Voice:** preview the first line. Check that names and numbers are pronounced right.
* **Caption style:** large, high-contrast, 3–5 words per line.

The tool splits the script into scenes, creates a visual for each, records the voiceover, times the captions and adds background music.

## Step 4: Review before you export

Watch the whole Short twice, once muted. Fix anything that breaks trust:

* A visual that doesn't match the line
* A caption with a typo or a misheard word
* Garbled text inside an image
* A last line that runs past the final visual

Then export as a vertical MP4, ideally 1080×1920.

## Step 5: Upload with the right settings

Upload from the YouTube app or YouTube Studio. Before you publish:

1. **Title:** write it like a search, under 60 characters. "Why planes fly at 35,000 feet" beats "Crazy aviation fact!!"
2. **Description:** one sentence on what the Short covers, plus 2–3 hashtags.
3. **Altered or synthetic content:** tick this only if the Short shows something realistic that didn't happen, or makes a real person seem to say something they didn't. Clearly non-realistic visuals don't need it. See YouTube's [disclosure rules](https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/14328491).
4. **Audience:** set whether it's made for kids.

Post on a schedule you can keep. Consistency matters more than any single upload, but avoid near-identical videos: YouTube does not monetize [AI content that looks mass-produced from generic templates](https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/1311392).

## How to do all five steps in ReelsMakerAI

ReelsMakerAI is built for the fully AI-generated method.

1. **Enter a topic, paste a script or paste an article link.** The AI writes a hook-first script you can edit.
2. **Pick a visual style, a voice and a caption style.**
3. **Render.** You get a vertical 9:16 HD MP4 with voiceover, scenes, burned-in captions and music.
4. **Download the MP4**, or on a paid plan, post it straight to YouTube.
5. **Automate it.** On a paid plan, an automated series makes and posts new Shorts on a schedule: 3 a week on Starter ($19/month), daily on Growth ($39/month), twice daily on Pro ($79/month).

You can start free with no credit card. See [pricing](https://reelsmakerai.com/pricing) for credits per plan.

## FAQ

### Can I make YouTube Shorts with AI for free?

Yes. Many AI video tools, including ReelsMakerAI, let you start free with no credit card. Paid plans add more videos per month and automatic posting.

### What size should an AI YouTube Short be?

Vertical 9:16 at 1080×1920 pixels, saved as an MP4\. Square videos also count as Shorts.

### How long can a YouTube Short be?

Up to three minutes for videos uploaded since October 15, 2024\. For AI Shorts, 30–60 seconds is a good default, and anything over a minute must avoid copyrighted music.

### Do I have to label AI-made Shorts?

Only when the Short shows realistic content that didn't happen, or makes a real person appear to say or do something they didn't. Clearly non-realistic visuals don't need the label.

### Can AI-generated Shorts make money?

Yes, if the channel meets YouTube Partner Program rules. YouTube won't monetize content that looks mass-produced from generic templates, so original scripts and variety matter.

### Can AI post Shorts for me automatically?

Some tools can. On ReelsMakerAI's paid plans, an automated series creates and posts new Shorts to YouTube on a schedule, from 3 a week to twice a day.
